Local housebuilder Lovell continues to ‘build’ relationship with community school
Pupils at Ysgol Treganna in Canton, Cardiff, have been practicing their building skills with the help of local housebuilder Lovell. The leading developer is currently building adjacent to the school at The Mill development just off Sanatorium Road.
The year 5 class took part in the ‘Lovell House Project’ which saw them build their very own mini homes, as well as learning all about trades and visiting The Mill site for themselves.
The children learnt all about the construction industry from eight Lovell employees, all from different departments. Across three days pupils were educated in health and safety, the stages of house building, as well as jobs in the wider industry.
Continuously building relationships with the local communities surrounding its developments, Lovell Homes has worked with the school on various projects including a visit around The Mill site. The children met the site manager, who conducted a question and answer session. Lovell also provided the pupils with hard hats and high visibility clothing for the visit.
Lovell aims to help children learn about the construction industry through hands-on experiences and by creating projects that are meaningful to their lives. The building of model houses can be incorporated into maths, geography, science and social studies lessons and teaches pupils a variety of transferable skills.
Rhys Harries, Head teacher at Ysgol Treganna said: We would like to thank Lovell homes for their input and working with the children on this project. The pupils have really enjoyed being part of this developing community. It’s great to see streets named by the pupils and bilingual signage on all these developments.”
Lovell also provided the school with welsh language books which included follow up work for the children to keep the project ongoing after their visit. The books focus on maths, ecology, health and safety, sustainability and construction.
James Duffett, regional managing director for Lovell, said: “We are delighted to have been able to lead this project at Ysgol Treganna as we are always looking for ways to help the local communities surrounding our developments.
“It is so important to us to urge education on the construction industry and hopefully inspire children to want to make a career in the trade as they grow older.”
