Visiting The Mill brings construction to life for Cardiff pupils

A visit to a landmark Cardiff new homes development brought the world of construction to life for local pupils from Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol Treganna.

Ninety children from the school enjoyed the tour of The Mill, one of Wales’ largest regeneration schemes, which is creating 800 new homes at a riverside site close to the school in Canton.

The behind-the-scenes visit to a real-life building project supported the work which pupils have been doing as part of their Design and Technology and Numeracy studies looking at how buildings are designed and made.

Head teacher Rhys Harries says: “I’m always pleased to see pupils and classes making the most of the local environment both natural and built. Lovell have helped us bring some really exciting projects to life with a number of initiatives – Diolch yn fawr.”

Homes developer Lovell, the Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association – the partners behind The Mill scheme - aim to create a legacy of benefits for the local area through the homes project which is going ahead with financial backing from the Principality Building Society and the support of the Welsh Government. The visit to The Mill was the latest in a series of community initiatives organised with Ysgol Treganna which have included the Lovell House construction challenge, a hands-on interactive activity where children build a mini house. Pupils have also been invited to name roads leading to the new housing development.

Lovell community co-ordinator Bernadette Vickery says: “Ysgol Treganna is very close to The Mill, so it’s presented a brilliant opportunity to involve the children with the fantastic new homes taking shape on their doorstep and get them thinking more widely about housebuilding and construction.

“The pupils were all very excited to visit the site and had lots of questions for the team. This kind of activity is a great way to encourage children and young people to think about why new homes are important and to help them appreciate the huge number of demanding and creative job roles which go into creating a housing development like this, perhaps even inspiring them to think about construction as a potential future career.”

The Mill, Canton, is bringing 800 contemporary homes to the former Arjo Wiggins paper mill site in West Cardiff. They include 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association – for the Tirion Group.
