The Mill partnership smooths the way for Cardiff pupils

Children and parents no longer have to dodge potholes and puddles on their way to school in Cardiff, thanks to a community project carried out as part of a major city homes development.

The partnership behind The Mill, a landmark development under way in Canton, have resurfaced a well-used footpath leading to local Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol Treganna.

The work to the footpath, which runs between the housing site and the school, was carried out by the site team. Homes developer Lovell, the Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association – the partners behind the 800-home scheme - aim to create a legacy of benefits for the local area through the homes project which is going ahead with financial backing from the Principality Building Society and the support of the Welsh Government.

Lovell community coordinator Bernadette Vickery says: “We were delighted to help out when the school asked if we could improve the footpath. The uneven ground was causing particular difficulties for parents with pushchairs and meant there were lots of puddles when it rained. The work has made a real difference, making it much easier to walk on and also safer for everyone.”

Head teacher Rhys Harries adds: “It’s great to have practical help with simple stuff like pathway access to the school. Thanks to the team for making our drop off and pick up considerably easier and my school considerably less muddy!”

A number of other community projects are planned with Ysgol Treganna, including providing a new bike shed and repairing some of the other paths in the school grounds. Pupils have also been invited to name roads leading to the new housing development.

The 800 homes under construction by Lovell at The Mill, Canton, are bringing fresh life to the former Arjo Wiggins paper mill site. They include 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association - for the Tirion Group who are developing the site in partnership with Lovell.

Partneriaeth The Mill yn paratoir ffordd ar gyfer disgyblion Caerdydd

Nid oes angen i blant a rhieni osgoi ceudyllau a phyllau dŵr ar eu ffordd i’r ysgol yng Nghaerdydd, diolch i brosiect cymunedol a gynhaliwyd fel rhan o ddatblygiad cartrefi mawr yn y ddinas.

Mae’r bartneriaeth sy’n cefnogi The Mill, datblygiad nodedig sydd ar waith yn Nhreganna, wedi arwynebu llwybr a ddefnyddir yn helaeth sy’n arwain at Ysgol Treganna, sef yr ysgol gynradd cyfrwng Cymraeg leol.

Cynhaliwyd y gwaith ar y llwybr, sydd rhwng y safle tai a’r ysgol, gan dîm y safle. Nod y datblygwr cartrefi Lovell, Grŵp Tirion a Chymdeithas Tai Cadwyn – y partneriaid sy’n cefnogi’r cynllun i godi 800 o gartrefi - yw creu canlyniadau buddiol i’r ardal leol trwy’r prosiect cartrefi, sy’n mynd rhagddo â chymorth ariannol gan Gymdeithas Adeiladu'r Principality a chefnogaeth Llywodraeth Cymru.

Meddai Bernadette Vickery, cydlynydd cymunedol Lovell: "Roeddem yn falch o helpu pan ofynnodd yr ysgol pe gallem wella'r llwybr. Roedd y tir anwastad yn achosi anawsterau penodol i rieni â phramiau ac roedd yn golygu bod llawer o byllau dŵr pan oedd hi'n bwrw glaw. Mae’r gwaith wedi gwneud byd o wahaniaeth, gan ei gwneud hi'n haws i gerdded arno a hefyd yn fwy diogel i bawb."

Ychwanegodd y Prifathro, Rhyd Harries: “Mae'n wych cael help ymarferol gyda’r pethau syml, megis mynediad i'r ysgol ar hyd y llwybr. Diolch i’r tîm am sicrhau adegau gollwng a chasglu lawer yn haws ac am ysgol lai budr!”

Mae nifer o brosiectau cymunedol eraill wedi’u cynllunio ag Ysgol Treganna, gan gynnwys darparu sied feiciau newydd ac atgyweirio rhai o'r llwybrau eraill ar dir yr ysgol. Gofynnwyd hefyd i’r disgyblion enwi ffyrdd sy'n arwain at y datblygiad tai newydd.

Mae’r 800 o gartrefi sy’n cael eu hadeiladu gan Lovell yn The Mill, Treganna, yn adnewyddu hen safle melin papur Arjo Wiggins. Maent yn cynnwys 358 o gartrefi i’w gwerthu ar y farchnad agored gan Lovell a 442 o gartrefi i’w gosod ar rent – a fydd yn cael eu rheoli gan Gymdeithas Tai Cadwyn - ar gyfer Grŵp Tirion sy’n datblygu’r safle mewn partneriaeth â Lovell.
