Local developers deliver cricket coaching to encourage sport in schools
Students at Pwll Coch Primary School in Cardiff have been practicing their sporting skills with the help of local new homes development, The Mill.
The Mill development, which is a partnership made up of Lovell Partnerships, the Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association, has recently provided cricket coaching to the pupils at the nearby school.
Jon Matthews, development manager at Tirion Homes, currently coaches the under 9s and under 11s at Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club and was very keen on organising a fun day of cricket with Pwll Coch Primary School.
Following England’s win of the Cricket World Cup this year, which was hosted by England and Wales, Jon was keen to get the community local to the development involved in the cricket and deliver the message that the sport is fun.
The coaching, provided by Jon himself, was taken from the All Stars Cricket programme which is the England and Wales Cricket Board’s entry level participation programme, aimed at providing children aged five to eight with a great first experience in cricket. The children learned to bat, bowl and brushed up on their fielding skills.
In attendance on the day was Jon and Bernadette Vickery, community coordinator at Lovell. They provided coaching for three classes on the day which enabled almost 60 children to get active.
Jon said: “I’m extremely passionate about cricket and I jump at any opportunity to give children a taster of the game and encourage them into the sport. The day really was great fun and the children had a fantastic time; I hope at least one of them will go on to enjoy the cricket as much as I do.”
Bernadette said: “At Lovell we are extremely focused on ensuring we put back into the local community and the cricket training was an important part of this work. This was also a great way of encouraging young people to join some outdoor sport and have fun whilst learning to work in teams.”
David Plain, sports coach at Pwll Coch Primary School, said: “I was delighted to be able to involve our pupils in high quality cricket coaching. It was very generous for The Mill partners to spend their time with us and the children had a brilliant day.”
The Mill, Canton, is bringing a new urban village to Cardiff, creating 800 contemporary homes at the former Arjo Wiggins paper mill site. They include 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association – for the Tirion Group. The scheme is going ahead with the support of the Welsh Government and financial backing from the Principality Building Society, and is being developed by the Tirion Group in partnership with Lovell.
